⁉ The project was part of an advanced seminar held as part of a co-op by Prof. Dr. Maria Rentetzi and Prof. Dr. Kristina Giesel at the Department of Physics in the summer semester of 2024, titled “How Does Gender Shape Science? The Intermingling of Gender and Natural Sciences in Historical Context.“

🔍 The seminar reflected on the history of physics from the perspective of the history of science and gender studies. In this context, the interdisciplinary students created their own research projects based on the methods of qualitative and quantitative social research.

📽 Part of the results was the 13-min-long video “The Entanglement of Scientific Competence and Fashion in the Field of Physics in Academia”, in which physics professors discuss their perception of (gender-specific) clothing styles in their field and their perception of a possible connection between clothing and assumed scientific competence.

📚 Here are some of the findings of the project: It is usually assumed that clothing has to be comfortable and suitable for the lab. Female professors define their in-group (where they can choose more casual clothing) differently to most male professors, with a tendency towards smaller in-groups When female professors dress fashionably, their competence is often questioned. This is not the case with male professors. Although fashion is not discussed within the field, it proves to be a topic of great importance in terms of social norms and gender bias.

💡 The Interviews, evaluation, and research were conducted by Anabel Kummer (Physics), Eileen Schneider (Physics) and Ralf Mitschke (Sociology). Special thanks to Ioana M. (Medical Engineering) for the wonderful work on video editing.
